    Back in the UGGs

I hate having cold feet! I guess it is becoming more and more a sign of growing older, but I just can’t stand it – I like to be able to feel my toes! This week has been the coldest that we have had all winter and it looks like it will continue for another week. I have been so thankful that last year, I invested in a couple of pairs of fahion-friendly UGG boots! While the UGG and puffer jacket combo is not particularly stylish, by golly it is warm! Although there is a big chunk of the year when my UGGs sit idly in my cupboard, the days…

    Winter’s Last Hurrah?

We have been hit with an Antarctic blast, and the consequences, besides the snow fall and power outages over much of Tasmania, is pulling on a puffer jacket! Just when we thought spring was coming in (early) with force, nature reminds us that winter is not yet done and has delivered a bitterly cold series of days, one after the other. Fortunately, the Tassie uniform is in fact a puffer jacket, and most of us have one (if not multiple) on hand for just such a cold front. Personally, I am a fan of the long-line jacket. It covers all of my back and cannot pull up to reveal the…

    Winter Whites

Wearing winter white now is a fabulous chic option if done right, unfortunately, the nature of white is to highlight any imperfections, so being mindful of the the limitations is essential to success. White is a fabulous colour to wear when there is a sea of black surrounding you. In Hobart, the black puffer jackets emerge and without intending it, you can disappear in the crowd (now that there might be crowds again)! It is also unforgiving, so it is important to understand the colour to ensure you look your best. White reflects all light waves, so it draws the eye and enhances imperfections. White shows fabric quality – be…

    Which white?

At first glance it might seem simple – wear white or paint it white, but it’s really not that easy. White, be it paint or fabric, has properties more pronounced than any other colour. Previously, I have talked about colour as being either a light energy or a pigment. Those rules still apply here but with a bit more oomph! White light is all the colours of the rainbow mixed together. When we see white light refracted through a prism, we see each of its components in the form of a rainbow. White paint on the other hand is essentially the absence of pigment – or is it? Cool White…

    Winter Woollies

We have a saying in Tasmania, ‘as the days get longer, the cold gets stronger’! Sunday marked the 2020 Winter Solstice and that means, of course, that the days are about to get longer and so, winter is here and we will really start to feel it. It’s now time to dive into our cupboards and pull out those warm winter woollies, give them a bit of a refresh and hope that they will see us through until the fear of the last frost has passed. We have a saying about that too: ‘don’t plant your tomatoes until after Show Day.’  Now, if you are not from southern Tasmania, Show…

Winter dresses – 10 Worth Considering

A dress in summer is easy, but which winter dress is worth considering? Is it warm enough, will you see it anyway? A dress for winter does raise many questions. I have identified 10 beauties below to help make the choice a little easier.  To make it simple – there are two types of winter dresses – the ones you layer under only and the ones you layer both under and over. That’s not to say you can’t add as many layers as you like – of course you can, but to keep a style focus, it works to think more simply. Sweater dresses Wear your layers under a sweater…

5 Skirts to Wear with Boots

One of my fashion favourites is a skirts and boots outfit. I love a knee-high boot, and have recently also climbed on the western wagon. I enjoy the stability of being in boots, but also the way the fabric of the skirt sweeps across the material of the boot. Whether you show a little leg or not, boots and skirts can be a great winter combination. The great advantage of knee-high boots in winter is the extra warmth they provide on the legs. A pair of thermal leggings will go unnoticed under a long skirt with knee-high boots. It helps to maintain warmth and is a very comfortable option.  Keeping…

Cool coats to keep you warm

Living in Tasmania, I have learned that keeping warm is all about the layers. Sure, you can throw on the puffer jacket and be done with it – but some of us prefer something a little more colourful and a lot less – well – puffy. Don’t get me wrong, I have the required Tasmanian uniform of the black puffer, I even have a puffer vest to layer under it – and when I need to fight off a particularly bitter wind – I’ll wear them, but I don’t feel stylish when I do. In winter, I could be wearing pyjamas underneath my coat for all that anyone else could…

    Why I love my Uggs

It was mid-2019 when I embarked on my UGG journey with my first pair of real UGG boots. I was convinced by one of my colleagues saying that hers were “like a warm hug for your feet”. That night, I went home and ordered a pair.  The first time I put them on, I knew I was hooked. They are so warm and so comfortable and dare I say it, come in some really stylish versions that are not the traditional one everyone thinks of when they say UGG boots (although there are many that are the traditional form), that you no longer need to sacrifice style for warmth.  I…
