    A Vase Moment

From the sleek and classical to the abstract and whimsical, vases are having a moment in home decor. They are being tucked neatly into vignettes sans botanticals, to create dimension and depth. I’m loving the daring designs and push for opaque surfaces.  Vases are like cushions. They add texture and colour to a shelf quickly and without pressure, because if you grow tired of them just move them or pop them in a cupboard for a while. Interestingly, some of the more historical designs are coming back but remixed in a new and contemporary feel. We are seeing colours perfectly adapted for the younger market. Textures and shapes are creating…

Metallic – A Must Have in Decor

Metallic accents in decor have been a key feature for several years – so much so, that they could almost be considered a classic item. The shift to powerful and statement decor: industrial, hollywood regency and glam – saw the proliferation of metallic features in home styling. Gold, silver, copper, bronze, rose gold, matt black, burnished bronze and brushed stainless steel have become common in a range of styled spaces. One of the great shifts is that metals need to be all the same – that is no longer the case, and in fact, the more realistic and sustainable approach of mixing metals has come to fore.  It is important,…

    Why pineapples?

The first pineapple I consciously encountered as a sign of hospitality was in Bali. My husband and I stayed in a lovely resort for our honeymoon, and there, gracing the entrance was a pineapple plinth crowned with an orchid planter. Until this point, pineapples were just a delicious fruit and a representation of QLD for me. Pineapples are bromeliads – yes, those wacky plants that people are desperately trying to keep alive in windows. They are not, as many believe, trees with fruit hanging down from them; they are more like a shrub projecting the fruit up at you. Pineapples are a south American fruit which made its way across…

Spend vs Save: Vintage Print art

Vintage prints are a fabulous decor item that invites a bit of sentimentality and history into your home. Typically, they are a graphic design in classic mid-century modern colours and lines. A vintage print with a wide-spaced mat around it looks fabulous! If you have access to a decent sized colour printer and a handy knack at DIY, then you can create for yourself some fabulous, budget-friendly art pieces. Target, Kmart and Big W, all sell frames, some of them with mats included that can be used to support such a project. On the other hand, if you don’t have the time or inclination to create your own, then the…

    Invisible TVs

Invisible TVs have made it to Australia! For anyone who watches US and UK design shows (I’m totally guilty), The Frame TV has been a feature for some time. I have watched jealously as beautiful homes were decorated and styled with TVs included, yet invisible.  For most us, a TV is essential somewhere in the house, and although they have gotten flatter, thinner, bigger and more versatile – they have always been that big black rectangle dominating the space – until now! Sensational Samsung According to my research, they are 4K QLED (I know, tech speak is not my thing), but we do have a 4kQLED TV and the picture…
