5 Signs It’s Time To Update Your Skincare

My mid-thirties was the point of my skin epiphany! It crept up on me without my noticing, then one day I had neck wrinkles and pigmentation! As I stared at my face and neck in the mirror, I realised that my skin was aging a lot faster than my mind – and I wasn’t ready for it – no way, no how! Were there solutions? Of course there were, many of them way beyond my budget – but it was clear something had to be done! It took me a few more years to find the perfect remedy for my skin. It took some research and an understanding of what…

    Look Leaner with Accessories

As we age, we tend to be graced with more curves – some of the curves enhance and support our appearance, others – well they just create bumps in the visual line of our bodies. Although the long-term solution takes a considerable amount of effort and committment to diet and exercise, there are quick styling tips that will support a leaner looking visage. Most of us have the required accessories in our existing wardrobe to create a leaner look in seconds. The following list are my go to pieces: A long necklace that sits below the bust – this creates a visual V-that breaks the line of the bust shelf…

    Fabulous Flats

Flats are some people’s best friend, but other people’s nemesis – I generally fall into the second category, but here are some fabulous flats worth considering. In order to reduce the chances that flats look frumpy and add too much weight at the base of your leg making you look stocky and bottom-heavy, there are a few important points to consider. Shape – a point or almond toe will bring elongation and help reduce the frumpiness. A narrow shape will also help keep feet looking more elongate. Colour – A nude or metallic will be more invisible and elongating. Colours that have high contrast to your natural skin tone will…

    Embracing Summer White

Although I’m sitting here typing in a jumper dress, summer is, technically, here and we are looking forward to embracing the summer heat and the lightweight clothing that goes with it. White is a classic in summer. It stems from the science of it all – white is the reflection of all light energies, it also reflects heat energies – and therefore, is the obvious choice for hot climates. White, however, is also classic, elegant and chic. It brings a sense of professionalism and class to an outfit. Not all skin tones look good in classic white, so it is important to know your white – is it cream, ecru,…

    Outfits for Summer Celebrating

In the season of gatherings, dinners, outings and celebrations, having a few key pieces in the wardrobe will make the whole – ‘I have nothing to wear’ a thing of the past. Create a capsule wardrobe of celebration outfits and you’ll be all set. The trick with a capsule wardrobe is to make sure there is a relationship between all of the pieces. A capsule wardrobe only needs around 12 pieces to be fully effective. Start with a one-and-done piece like a dress or jumpsuit. Select three bottoms. These could be skirts, pants or shorts – or one of each. Two of these pieces should be basic in style, and…

    Figure-flattering Swimwear

I don’t know about you, but for me there have been particular events in my life that have made me stop and think about swimwear more thoughfully. The ease with which I threw on a pair of bathers (or dare I say it, a bikini) in my late teens and early twenties disappeared during pregnancy. Scroll forward more than twenty years (gulp!) and swimwear is quite a bit more of a challenge. Although I readily believe the shape of my body is a happy reflection of a life well-lived, there are certian – let’s call them wobbly bits – I don’t need the world to see. My arms are a…

    Puttin’ on Party Shoes

Create balance in your party outfit with thoughtful consideration of your footwear. For a leg-lengthening effect, a heel is a must, but for evening longevity, a chunky heel will serve you far better than a stiletto. Add a bold pop of colour or a bit of sparkle to really get your feet into the party spirit. Rockstuds or a rockstud duplicate, a bright Christmas red or something with that extra shimmer and shine are great party shoes to be puttin’ on this year. Although it is easy to think that a designer brand is needed (think Jimmy Choo or Valentino), in actual fact, there are equally lovely, and sometimes almost…

    The Gentle Drape

Few tops, whether they be blouses or cardigans, are more effortlessly figure-flatering than those with a drape. The drape, a volume of fabric that gently folds across the front delivers interest and cover, that because of the delicate nature of folds, becomes a feature that hides a multitude of sins. Not all drapes are created equal. The ideal drape will move diagonally across the body in a top. It will draw the eye and the folds in the drape will gently complement each other. The volume of fabric is flattering rather than adding width. Draped cardigans are also a figure-flattering option. However, the drapes should now be vertical rather than…

    Style Trend: Super Sneakers

All sneakers are not created equal. A fashion sneaker is not designed for exercise – they are designed to support an outfit not the bones, ligaments and tendons of your foot. Interestingly, the rise of the sneaker in fashion reminds me of fashion rules of the 90s when I was a teenager – never wear jeans and sneakers- comes to mind immediately. Of course, we didn’t have the plethora of sneaker styles, technologies and influencers then that we have now. As a teen, I had one pair of sneakers – which performed all sneaker duties from exercise to uniform to fashion. Those days have changed. Personally, I have had the…

    Wearing Peplums

The peplum is an ancient outfit tool. It has the potential to redefine a silhouette and make an outfit more figure-flattering. However, all peplums are not created equal and there are several factors that should be considered when rocking a peplum. Of primary importance is the position in which the peplum will sit. For the most figure-flattering style, the small of the peplum should sit on the small of your waist. The style of the peplum – how much ruffle it has – will impact how it sits. The length of your waist will determine where the peplum sits. I, for example, am long-waisted – so I need to be…
