Beaches are as iconic to the Australian experience as any of the man-made landmarks. We are lucky enough to have a beach of sorts either just down the road or within a day trip for most of us. Obviously, in the centre of the country that is a bit more complex. I grew up on the coarse sandy beaches of the Murray River, but some of us are lucky enough to have the oceanic, coastal beaches on our doorstep. This spring-summer season – no matter your type of beach, take the time to walk barefoot in the sand, let the water wash up around your ankles, breathe the fresh air and be thankful for what we have – oh, and don’t forget to slather on the sunscreen!
I don’t know about you, but for some reason, beach towels in my household are the first to be sacrificed to clean up the dogs or provide the protection barrier between dirty yard clothes and the furniture. Of course, this constantly gives me an excuse to replace and update them. Here are some cute options. I’m particularly loving the palmtrees from Bed Bath ‘n’ Table.
Of course, getting everything you need to the beach requires a stylish beach bag. And, once you are there, having a few luxurious touches doesn’t go astray. Who’d have imagined chilled wine glasses for the beach? Of course, you don’t need to fill it with wine – but I remember the hot, half-flat soft drink because we didn’t bring an esky – well, no more!
As always, when out in the Australian sun – slip, slop, slap, seek, and slide, but above all, take in the view, take a deep breath and be grateful for the amazing opportunity having a beach to visit is – enjoy your moment with nature!
